TITLE WINNING RACE TICKET. HAKKINEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP CLINCHED IN JAPAN FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING. Going into the race, the last of the season, Eddie Irvine (Ferrari) led the world championship by four points from Hakkinen (McLaren-Mercedes West) after Ferrari had been disqualified in Malaysia but had the points reinstated following an appeal. Hakkinen was reigning world champion from 1998 and Schumacher had missed a big chunk of the season after breaking his leg at the British GP, leaving team mate Irvine as the main challenger to Hakkinen. A heavy crash in qualifying made Irvine start fifth on the grid and once Hakkinen had taken the lead from Schumacher (the pole-sitter) at the start, Hakkinen, who needed victory to win the championship held on to take his second sucessive drivers' title although Ferrari had claimed its first constructors' title in 16 years and was about to enter the long period of Schumacher/Ferrari dominance from 2000-2005. Race Podium: Mika Hakkinen 1st, Michael Schumacher 2nd, Eddie Irvine 3rd. Postage will be by registered airmail wherever possible with most countries now being possible.
