RARE GRANDSTAND TICKET FOR TITLE DECIDING LAST RACE OF THE SEASON. HAKKINEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP CLINCHED IN JAPAN AFTER SCHUMACHER STALLS AT THE START. Going into the race, the last of the season, Hakkinen (McLaren-Mercedes West) led Schumacher in the Ferrari by just 4 points. Schumacher was on pole but perhaps the pressure of having lost the previous race and needing to win got to him, and he stalled at the start. Unlike Senna famously ten years earlier, he was unable to recover and started the race proper (after a restart) at the back of the grid. Hakkinen drove on to win and emphatically delivered his first world title along with confirming McLaren Mercedes as constructors' champions. This was also the last race of Tyrrell, champions of much of the early '70s, in Formula 1. Race Podium: Mika Hakkinen 1st, Eddie Irvine 2nd, David Coulthard 3rd.
