Description

RARE TICKET. FIRST JAPANESE GRAND PRIX HELD AT SUZUKA. TITLE DECIDER. ROUND 15/16. TITLE DECIDER. FIRST F1 GRAND PRIX HELD AT SUZUKA. PIQUET'S CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER MANSELL ACCIDENT IN FRIDAY PRACTICE. SENNA'S LAST POINTS FOR LOTUS. BERGER/FERRARI RACE WINNER. Formula 1 returned to Japan after a 10 year hiatus (the previous time was at Fuji in 1976 and 1977, the James Hunt years) but this time at a new track at Suzuka, Honda's circuit. Soichiro Honda had reportedly told his race engineers (working with Williams and Lotus) that they "had to win and to keep on winning". Honda as engine-supplier had already secured the constructors' championship with Williams and coming to the race only Williams team mates Nelson Piquet or Nigel Mansell could win the drivers' championship. Mansell ended the contest before race day by crashing heavily in Friday practice and, by injuring himself, ruled himself out of the race and the season finale in Australia therby handing the championship to Piquet. The Ferrari of Gerhard Berger claimed P1 and he carried this form into race day on the Sunday. Piquet dropped out of the race early and with no Mansell it was left to Senna in his Lotus Honda (Camel) to carry the fight finishing a good second in what turned out to be his last points for Lotus. Local favourite Nakajima, the first Japanese F1 driver, finished 5th in his Lotus Honda. The same 1-2 of Berger and Senna was to be the result in the season ending Australian GP before Senna was disqualified for a Lotus technical infringement. Soichiro Honda had not been impressed by the way Williams had handled Piquet and Mansell over the season and the result was Senna and Honda moving to McLaren in '88. The rest as they say is history. F1 had found in Suzuka one of its most dramatic circuits and Suzuka was to prove to be the title decider for the next four seasons marked by the fierce battles of the Senna vs Prost rivalry of '88, '89 and '90 and with Senna's win over Mansell in '91. The programmes for this race and the other Japan title deciders in '88, '89, '90 and '91 are also listed currently. Race Podium: Gerhard Berger 1st, Ayrton Senna 2nd, Stefan Johansson 3rd.
